Senators, Members of the Parliament of Canada, foreign diplomats and representatives of the Ukrainian community of Canada commemorated the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.
In their speeches, the Honorable Harjit Sajjan Minister of Defense of Canada, the Honorable Senator Raynell Andreychuk and Mr. Guy Caron, NDP House Leader not only condemned the Holodomor crimes, but also confirmed the support of Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian military aggression. The speakers also stressed the role of the Ukrainian community of Canada in informing the civilized world about the Holodomor tragedy, as well as in research and preservation of historical memory on this matter.
The participants of the event also joined the Ukrainian World Congress initiative "Candle of Remembrance". 85 names of children from the list of millions who died during the Holodomor-genocide were read. A symbolic candle of remembrance was lit by Julia Woychyshyn & Ms. Halyna Zelem, Holodomor survivors.
The Clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches in Ottawa held a memorial service for the dead.
A special exhibition devoted to the tragic events of 1932-1933 in Ukraine was also held in the Parliament.
