Strengthening Ties with Saskatchewan: Political, Academic, and Energy Partnerships in Focus
14 May 2025 17:51

Saskatchewan is a unique province of Canada, with nearly 15% of its population having Ukrainian roots. The province’s economy is primarily based on the agricultural sector, energy, and the extraction of critical minerals.

In the capital city of Regina, Ambassador Yuliya Kovaliv held meetings with government officials, energy companies, and the academic community.

During her meeting with Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe and Minister of Trade Warren Kaeding, the parties discussed strengthening cooperation with Ukraine in the areas of trade and economy, agribusiness, energy, and the development of interregional cooperation. Premier Moe emphasized his firm support for Ukraine in countering Russian aggression and acknowledged the important historical role the Ukrainian community played in building Saskatchewan. The Ambassador expressed gratitude to the Premier for the support provided to newly arrived Ukrainian citizens.

In her discussion with Minister of Energy Colleen Young, priority areas of cooperation in the energy sector and opportunities for the restoration of Ukraine's energy infrastructure were outlined.

With Minister of Immigration Jim Reiter, programs supporting newly arrived Ukrainians were discussed.

The Ambassador thanked the President of SaskPower, Rupen Pandy, for the company’s assistance in restoring Ukraine’s energy infrastructure damaged by Russian aggression.

With Dr. Jeff Keshen, President of the University of Regina, the parties agreed to expand academic partnership and support Ukrainian students. The Ambassador invited the University of Regina to join the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies.

With Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski, an agreement was reached to develop partnerships with Ukrainian cities and to launch a “Ukrainian Bookshelf” at the Regina Public Library.

The Ambassador expressed special gratitude to the Saskatchewan–Ukraine Relations Advisory Committee (SURAC) for their longstanding contributions to developing bilateral relations and active support for Ukraine. The Committee, established in 1996, has served for nearly 30 years as a platform that coordinates bilateral cooperation and supports the Ukrainian community in the province.

The symbolic conclusion of the visit was the laying of flowers at the Holodomor Memorial commemorating the victims of the 1932–1933 genocide in Ukraine. The monument, located next to the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, is a replica of the original sculpture that stands at the entrance to the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide in Kyiv.

We sincerely thank the province of Saskatchewan for the warm welcome and unwavering support for Ukraine.
