Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada, Yuliya Kovaliv, continued her visit to the province of Saskatchewan. The day in Saskatoon was filled with meetings with municipal officials, local businesses, leading universities, and the Ukrainian student community. Each conversation centered on joint projects, support, and mutually beneficial development.
During the meeting with the Mayor of Saskatoon, Cynthia Block, Ambassador Kovaliv expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome extended to Ukrainians in the province. The discussion also focused on strengthening sister-city relations between Saskatoon and Chernivtsi.
At Cameco, Ambassador met with President Tim Gitzel to discuss the future of nuclear energy, industry trends and innovations, and — most importantly — the role of Canadian business in supporting Ukraine.
At Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Ambassador held an engaging conversation with President Dr. Larry Rosia and Director of International Partnerships Angela Wojcichowsky. They discussed cooperation with Ukrainian educational institutions, student exchange opportunities, and the implementation of joint projects for Ukraine. Cam Baker from Nutrien also joined the discussion.
At the University of Saskatchewan (USask), Ambassador Kovaliv engaged in an open dialogue with President Peter Stoicheff. The focus was on strengthening USask’s collaboration with Ternopil National Pedagogical University, the role of Canadian universities in fostering solidarity with Ukraine, and how academic institutions can serve as powerful instruments of diplomacy in today’s world.
A special part of the day was the meeting with Ukrainian students and representatives of St. Thomas More College and the International Student and Study Abroad Centre (ISSAC). Students shared their experiences and reflections, and the Ambassador emphasized: “You, the students, are Ukraine’s voice in Canada. Being ambassadors of truth, initiating new projects, and supporting one another — all of this matters deeply for Ukraine and in confronting Russian aggression.”
She also invited the institutions mentioned to join the Global Coalition for Ukrainian Studies, an initiative launched by Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska.
The day concluded with a business roundtable hosted by Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership Inc. (STEP). The Ambassador encouraged companies to take advantage of existing opportunities to invest in and expand trade with Ukraine. Canadian companies such as Atlas, Wilger, Bourgault Industries, and Quarterhill expressed strong interest in building partnerships with Ukrainian counterparts.
