President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko sees a great potential of Ukrainian-Canadian cooperation in many spheres, particularly military-technical, energy and security sphere.
In the interview to CBC TV channel, the Head of State expressed gratitude to Canada for a strong support to Ukraine in a difficult time and noted that it was difficult to overestimate such a support from a country-member of G7. “The whole world is united in supporting Ukraine in difficult times,” the President said.
Petro Poroshenko informed that in the course of the visit, he was willing to discuss the enhancement of cooperation for further strengthening of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to him, the case is not about the supply of lethal weapons, but Canada can help with the supply of non-lethal types of armament and technologies.
The President expressed opinion that Canada could have joined the U.S. and the EU in providing macro-financial assistance to the Ukrainian economy.
Petro Poroshenko mentioned great prospects of partnership in energy sphere, taking into account that Canada has the third world potential of proven oil and gas fields. “We need a strategy program of partnership in energy sphere,” the Head of State emphasized. Particularly, he noted prospects of partnership in the construction of LNG-terminals, the development of shale gas output and nuclear power engineering. “We can have a synergy from combining our potentials,” the President emphasized.
“But most of all Ukraine needs the unity of the entire world in the solution of the issue of its security,” the Head of State said. Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that post-war mechanisms of security do not work anymore. “The world must reconsider its security systems and the position of Canada is extremely important in this issue,” the President noted.
Answering the question about a new “cold war”, Petro Poroshenko emphasized that the day before, the Parliament of Ukraine had ratified the Association Agreement with the EU. “Ukraine crossed the Rubicon and destroyed hopes for the revival of the Soviet Union. We are a European nation,” the President noted.
