Today, Canada's Governor General Mary Simon announced the awarding of the Order of Canada to 78 Canadians - one of the country's highest honors recognizing outstanding citizens who have made extraordinary contributions to the development of the nation.
Among this year’s honorees is Mr. Victor Hetmanczuk, Chair of the Board of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, who has been recognized "for his unwavering dedication and leadership within and beyond the Ukrainian-Canadian community."
Over the past 50 years, Mr. Hetmanczuk has made a significant impact on the development of the Ukrainian-Canadian community and Canadian society as a whole. His remarkable career includes leadership roles at Ukrainian Canadian Social Services, Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank, Petro Canada, and community contributions through organizations such as the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, Ukrainian Care Centre, Ukrainian World Foundation, SO-USE Credit Union, and various positions within the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.
The Order of Canada was established in 1967, on the occasion of Canada's centennial. Since then, over 7,600 Canadians have been awarded this honor. While the contributions of honorees vary greatly, they all share a common legacy of enriching Canada’s life and making the country better.
The Order's motto, DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM, translates to "They desire a better country."
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Victor Hetmanczuk, the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, and the entire Ukrainian community on this prestigious recognition.
