Yesterday, the Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s hosted the memorial event “Remembering Bucha” — a gathering that brought together Ukrainians, Canadians, and all those who stand with Ukraine to honour the victims of the Bucha massacre and demonstrate unwavering solidarity with Ukraine.
Bucha has become a symbol of the brutality and impunity of Russian war crimes. In April 2022, the world witnessed horrifying images of civilians tortured and executed — killed in their homes, on their streets, in their yards. These were not isolated incidents, but part of Russia’s deliberate campaign of terror against Ukraine since the very first day of the full-scale invasion.
The Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada joined representatives of the provincial government and the local Ukrainian community to take part in this important act of remembrance. A moment of silence, the national anthems of Ukraine and Canada, heartfelt remarks from speakers, and testimonies from witnesses of the tragedy — journalists and cultural figures — created an atmosphere of deep reflection and collective support.
A particularly moving moment was the performance of the spiritual piece “Trisagion” by the Lady Cove Choir, a tribute to memory and hope.
Ukraine remembers every victim of Russian aggression. The world must remember too. For evil left unpunished never stops.
We are grateful to all who joined us, who stand for truth, and who continue to fight for a just and lasting peace.
