In his speech the Governor General of Canada noted that his country was the firstWestern country to recognize Ukraine'sindependence. He also underscored the fact that the Ukrainians came to Canada over 120 years ago and that currently therewere over one million Ukrainian Canadians living in Canada.
During a meeting of the Ukrainian Ambassador with the Governor General of Canada, which was also attended by a representative of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, there were discussions with regard to mutual cooperation and join actions by Ukraine and Canada in combating such present day challenges as: international terrorism, halting the proliferation of weapons of mass distraction, and the growing global food shortages. Both sides agreed to mutually cooperate and act jointly in the following spheres: the development of democracy, protection of human rights, further development of economy and trade cooperation as well as the development of educational, cultural ant inter-regional ties.
That same day there was a Ukrainian National Flag raising ceremony at the Ukrainian Ambassador residence.
The diplomats of the Embassy of Ukraine and the representatives of the Ukrainian community in Canada came to congratulate Ambassador and his family with this important event. Among those present were Paul Grod, the President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and Taras Zalusky, the Executive Director of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.
