On May 18, 2017, the Ottawa City Hall raised the flag of the Crimean Tatars. We are grateful to Canada's Capital and His Worship Mayor Jim Watson for this sign of support to the Crimean Tatars who suffered the mass deportation back in 1944 and now are facing oppression and human rights violations by the Russian occupational authorities.
It is for the first time that Ottawa raises the flag of the Crimean Tatars; last year the flag was raised next to Ontario Legislature in Toronto.
"We are grateful to Canada's capital for this sincere, kind and symbolic gesture" - said Ambassador Andriy Shevchenko. - Canadians do believe that the evil should be punished, justice will win and that Crimean Tatars will be able to freely raise their flag in their home".
Ambassador of Ukraine Andriy Shevchenko, His Worship Mayor Jim Watson, MP Kerry Diotte, UCC President Paul Grod, former Prime Minister of Ukraine Mr. Arseniy Yatseniuk, representatives of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar communities took part in the ceremony next to the Ottawa city Hall.
